Janie A. De Jesus Platform Statement: I have worked in the Occupational Health setting for 24 years+ and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I believe that Occupational Health is a fascinating nursing field and feel very fortunate to have been able to be part of it. I actually started working for my present employer since I was 17 years old. I worked as a summer student while in high school and in college in their Medical Records department. I enjoyed this field so much that I wanted to learn more so I went for my Masters degree in Community Health with the emphasis in Occupational Health. I had the wonderful opportunity of having Katherine Moore as my mentor at Shell in Deer Park. I have also had an opportunity to serve as a mentor to TWU nursing students. For the past several years I have volunteered as a panel speaker for Brazosport College’s Nursing Career Fair. There are usually about 100 participants. I get to speak about one of my favorite subjects…Occupational Health Nursing. I have been involved in community volunteer efforts since I was in high school. While in college I was elected to serve on the Student Government and in my senior year as the Student Government V.P. for the Houston Center at TWU. While in graduate school I was inducted as a member of Sigma Theta Tau. In the early 1990’s I served on the TSAOHN board as Director of Professional Affairs. In the past few years my emphasis has been being an involved parent with our three daughters- two in college and one in high school. I have participated with a number of organizations such as the American Cancer Society and Angleton Girls Softball Association (board positions), The American Cancer Society Relay for Life (Dow team), Brazoria County Fair Association (Dow booth), The United Way – company fundraising, the Beach Clean ups, Keep Angleton Beautiful, Martin Luther King parade, Texas Parks and Wildlife Coastal Expo, Project Graduation 2004 and 2006, and as a Varner-Hogg State Park volunteer. I have enjoyed having my children also participate as volunteers in a lot of these activities. I have been recognized through The Dow Chemical Company with the Martin Luther King award for work on the Hispanic Latin network.I believe I bring a lot of experience not only from my work area but also within the community setting and would like an opportunity to be able to serve the TSAOHN membership as your Recording Secretary. Thank you. |
