Sandra G. Carson

Platform Statement:

I have been in occupational health nursing for almost 20 years and I am proud to have been a part of TSAOHN, originally in the Dallas Chapter then in the Houston Chapter for the past 12 years. Over those years, this association has made an important difference in shaping me both professionally and personally and as I have “taken” from it, I have always done so with the intent to give back and at times I have been able to do so. In these challenging economic times, fewer people volunteering and a changing environment for occupational and environmental health nursing, I feel it is the right time for me to offer to give back again. I am convinced that through dedicating my time, energy and talents, not only do I give back to my profession but also I will garner personal and professional growth.

I have certainly gained from each of the 5 pillars to the AAOHN mission statement and if elected, I will work hard to continue the advancement of the occupational and environmental health profession. Our organization’s VITAL values are very much in line with my personal and professional values and as I run for the position of Director, I run on a platform of active participation through visionary leadership. To get on the leading edge, we must transform our profession by merging the best parts of our history and present with the strategies that overcome the current and future challenges while keeping our profession compelling and relevant for 2010 and beyond.

Platform Statement:

I am interested in serving as a Director for TSAOHN, because our career field is exciting and expanding!

I have a positive outlook, time and desire to work hard to promote our specialty. As the former Occupational Health Nurse Manager for the Texas National Guard, and Associate Director of Education for the Texas LVN Board of Nursing, I feel we can grow our profession’s membership by actively tapping into both military and newly graduated nurses looking for a career challenge. New graduates may not realize that there is more to nursing than “Med-Surg”. I would work to keep our membership at the cutting edge of Occupational Health care and to promote interest in TSAOHN among healthcare professionals.

I am available to serve in any capacity needed and would be honored to work as a Director. Let’s work together to encourage other members to become involved and further the occupational health nursing career field.
